Tour de Yorkshire 2018

It’s that time of year again – the Tour de Yorkshire is set to return to Scarborough.

This year’s cycle race will be held over four days, commencing Thursday 3rd May and concluding on Sunday 6th May 2018.

Stage Three, which takes place on Saturday 5th May, is the one that will visit Scarborough twice and includes the exciting sprint finish.

The route follows a gruelling 181 km starting in Richmond and ending in Scarborough’s North bay.

Following sprints in the Yorkshire Dales and trips through the market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk, the cyclists will head into the North York Moors National Park including the steep and curvaceous Cote de Sutton Bank.

It will then head down to Helmsley before pedalling to Pickering for another sprint. The cyclists will follow the A170 and eventually tackle another climb at Cote de Silpho, after which the peloton will breeze through Scarborough for its first visit before heading to Filey, then will head back inland to Scarborough to the finish line.

The race is great for Yorkshire and Scarborough as it brings our lovely region to TV screens across the UK, Europe and beyond.

Winifred Holtby & Wilfred Owen in New Exhibition

In the run up to the centenary of the end of World War One, Scarborough is stepping into the fray with two fascinating exhibitions at its celebrated Art Gallery.

Scarborough Art Gallery, found in The Crescent (Scarborough’s answer to the architecture of Bath!), has just launched its summer exhibitions at it beautiful location, just a short walk from the Red Lea.

The new display celebrates the final year of war poet Wilfred Owen’s life (1917 to 1918), some of which was spent here in Scarborough.

The exhibition will explore his experiences, the people he met and the places he visited, and gauge how much all this shaped his poetical works.

And in tandem with this homage to Wilfred Owen, novelist and journalist Winifred Holtby, who penned South Riding, also features in an exhibition at the same venue.

Winifred’s short life (she died aged just 37) is explored in this display that is curated by photojournalist Lee Karen Stow.

Both exhibitions are available to view from 7th April to 2nd September 2018 inclusive.
